The June 29, 2008 Modern Art & Design Auction featured over 500 outstanding lots of paintings, prints, sculpture, furniture, and other decorative objects from 1920 to 2008. Held at the Pacific Design Center, this auction showcased an extraordinary collection of work from the world’s most renowned Modern artists and architects.
This auction’s premier selections included fine art by Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Ed Kienholz, and Sam Francis and a large selection of Architectural Pottery and other studio ceramics from David Cressey, Rudy Autio, Peter Voulkos, Otto & Vivika Heino, and Beatrice Wood. Additionally, a significant selection of Danish Modern furniture was offered, including pieces by Hans Wegner, Nanna Ditzel, and Arne Jacobsen.
Auction highlights ran the gamut of fine art, furniture, and even lighting. A blue, red, and green Andy Warhol Mao screenprint (Lot 301 est. $40,000 – 60,000) realized $86,400. Ed Ruscha’s Nightsky (Lot 55 est. $4,000 – 6,000) sold for $19,200. The Edward Kienholz assemblage H.I.D. 6 (Lot 169 est. $8,000 – 10,000) realized $18,000. Two hanging lamps, one by Piero Raimondi (Lot 357 est. $12,000 – 15,000, realized $36,000) and the other by Paavo Tynell (Lot 20 est. $8,000 – 10,000, realized $26,400) both sold high above their estimates. Additionally, one of Gretta Grossman’s most elegant and imaginative works, a desk with rare top storage unit (Lot 37 est. $4,000 – 6,000), realized $21,600.
