International Bidding Drives California Works to New Highs


The May 19, 2013 auction broke world records for a work by Vija Celmins, the highest price achieved at auction for a work on canvas by the artist, and a work by Joe Goode, which set a new world auction record for any work by the artist.

LAMA achieved a new company record for total sales, realizing $3.46 million and selling 120% of the 469 lots by value. Sunday’s auction firmly establishes LAMA’s position as an international marketplace for Modern Art & Design.

Photography At Auction

The much-talked about first edition of Paris Photo LA has not only brought in visitors from around the world to Los Angeles, but the opening last night also created a new energy around town. Photography in general has become increasingly more important in the art market with prices soaring for modern and contemporary works.

The upcoming May 19, 2013 Modern Art & Design Auction features 25 lots of photography, an indicator of the growing photography market. The offerings include works by Sean Scully, Cindy Sherman, Julius Shulman, Jock Sturges, Antoine Verglas, William Wegman, and Man Ray (among others). Highlights include a 1963 photograph by Ruth Bernahrd (Lot 70) and Rescue at Sea, PBY Bristol Gunner by Horace Bristol (Lot 64).
